With an interstellar debate on climate change looming, the League of Planets are seeking new ways to spread their message of peace and love for all. They’re hoping the upcoming planet liga can be a success!
With a new tournament system and more players, this year’s league will be bigger than ever. It will include teams from the lower divisions as well, which is a great way to introduce new talent into the league and to make sure everyone gets a chance to play. The first season will run from October 10 to November 11, with the top two teams from each tournament promoted to the next one.
The competition has a unique format: fans can score ‘green goals’ for their team by taking actions that reduce their impact on the planet. This is done by logging their activity on the Planet League website and it’s important to abide by the popular internet rule “pictures or it didn’t happen!”
Fleetwood Town Community Trust are working alongside the Planet League team to help educate supporters on how they can become more sustainable. They will also be running a stall before the match on Tuesday 25 October with members of the team to give supporters more information about the campaign and encourage them to get involved!
Each week, the planet liga Planetliga will focus on a different topic such as energy, food or travel. The club whose supporters take the most action will win the Planet League Cup. The League of Planets is the UK’s leading football climate action network and has partnered with Ball Corporation, the world’s largest producer of recycled aluminum packaging, to develop the eco-friendly tournament for the 2018-19 season.
Thousands of grassroots football clubs and schools across the country have been encouraged to take part by 12 County FAs, with free classroom materials made available. The tournament will feature a number of exciting features including player performance penalties (Match, Gross and Abuse of Official), a league coordinator who will handle all suspensions and a new league stats system. The league will also be introducing a ‘Team Rep’ system, whereby every club will have an individual representative who can ask questions and provide feedback to the League Coordinator. This will allow for a quicker, more efficient and transparent process for the league. For more information about the planet liga, click here. To get involved in the tournament, you can sign up here.
